Choir News!

Choir Practice will begin Sunday, Feb. 12^th at 5pm in thesanctuary. We will begin working on specials for Sundays as well as Easter music soon. We welcome new voices tojoin the veterans. See Cheryl O. for questions.

Women’s Ministry

The Pueblo Colorado Women’s Connectioninvites all women to their “Caring for the Heart” Luncheon on February 9^that 12 -1:30 pm. It is at LaRenaissance Restaurant and cost $14 or $10 for firsttime guests. “GOD'S PLAN” By Carol Waldenmeyer

Now that Christmas is all packed away and everything is backto normal, I hope you don't let your preschooler forget that Christmas issomething we celebrate all year long. God shows His love for useveryday. Not just on Christmas and Easter. There's a plan for us to follow inorder to be in God's will.

1st-We must accept that God loves us. He loves us so much that He allowed Hisperfect Son, Jesus, to take the blame for our sins. Preschoolers love to hearhow much God loves them. (John 3:16)

2nd-We must recognize that everyone sins. Sin separates us fromGod. Preschoolers are taught that they also sin. (disobeying Mom and Dad,lying, taking things that don't belong to them). God has rules that we all mustfollow. (Romans 3:23, 6:23)

3rd- BelieveJesus is the answer. This is our first step towards faith. (Acts 16:31).Preschoolers have so much faith in the adults they have in their lives. It's soimportant to teach them God's way of living when they are young. We as teachershave a huge responsibility where your children are concerned.

4th-Admit to God that you are a sinner and ask Him to forgive you.(1 John 1:9) Showing a preschooler forgiveness when he disobeys helps himto understand that God, as well as you, love him no matter what he does,but God wants us to follow His guidelines.

During February your preschooler will learn how people inthe Bible work together to help show their love to one another. Wehave so much fun with your preschooler every week. We look forward to teachingthem and we miss them when they aren't in class, so please try to have them inclass each week.

“Wings Like ADove” By David H.Roper

David sighed, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove!I would fly away and be at rest” (Psalm 55:6). As for me, I’d build a cabin in the Sawtooths, or take a permanentpost in a fire-lookout tower. When life weighs on me, I too yearn to fly awayand be at rest.

David wrote freely about his circumstances:Violence, oppression, and strife surrounded him on all sides, stirred up by thedisloyalty of an old friend (55:8-14). Fear and terror, pain and trembling,anxiety and restlessness overwhelmed him (vv.4-5). Is it any wonder he longedto fly away?

But escape was impossible. He could not evade hislot. He could only give his circumstances to God: “As for me, I will call uponGod, and the Lord shall save me. Evening and morning and at noon I will pray,and cry aloud, and He shall hear my voice” (vv.16-17).

Whatever our circumstances—a burdensome ministry, adifficult marriage, joblessness, or a deep loneliness— wecan give them to God. He has lifted the burden of our sins; will He not liftthe weight of our sorrows? We have trusted Him with our eternal souls; can wenot entrust our present circumstances to Him? “Cast your burden on the Lord,and Heshall sustain you” (55:22).

This Christmas, as you reveal the greatest love story ever told to your kids, try this tip to help your whole family remember that Jesus is the reason for the season!

“Help your little ones focus on others this season by making use of those Christmas cards received in the mail. Place the cards in a basket on the dinner table; taking turns each night drawing one out. Then pray together for that person or family.”

“NoProof of God” read last Saturday’s lead article in the Chieftain’s Faith &Religion section. The story detailed a lecture presented at the Unitarian Universalist Church inEast Pueblo.

VictorStenger (76) atheist and professor of philosophy at the University of Coloradopresented his argument against the Judeo-Christian-Islamic god and highlightedthe detrimental effect he believes religion has on science and the progress ofhumanity.

Much ofhis diatribe centered on the questioning of issues most Christians have alreadydealt with successfully, such as, “proving God scientifically”, “unansweredprayers”, “creation or science”, and “the silence of God”.

His mostgleaning false accusations dealt with Christianity’s science. He says they areincompatible. Any fair-minded observer would agree that science formed itsorigin in western culture where Christians predominated. The Bible takes apositive approach toward creation as the marvelous handiwork of God. TheEastern cultures deny the importance of this world and science, preferring toescape into other-worldly more spiritual concerns.

Christiansbelieve that accurate science and accurate Bible interpretation harmonize. IfGod is the source of both, there can be no conflict when rightly understood.Only poor scientists and poor Bible interpreters find conflict between the two.

“Whatscience does show is quite humbling in the grand scheme of things”, Stengerexplained. Oddly, similar comments were roundly accepted as last week’s PWBCWednesday Evening Bible Study of Ps. 19:1. The exploration of nature’smysteries enhances our awareness of God, rather than demanding atheisticexplanations. Stenger ‘s best guess at the worlds origin was a “big bang” oreternity, a mind-boggling faith that the cosmos had no beginning or designer.

Also, hedescribes some Christians who deny global warming by casually accepting thatthe world is self-regulating and self-correcting. Meanwhile, he blindly acceptsthat the universe automatically fine-tunes itself using “mathematicalequations”.

Regardingvalues and morals, Stenger commits his most serious error of logic. He attacksthe Christian concept of heaven and hell as counter productive. That is, heassumes that believers who anticipate rewards and punishments in the afterlifeget lazy and apathetic about the world’s needs. On the contrary, the atheistsof this world are those who are insensitive and fatalistic regarding humanity,morals, and charity, whereas Christians, Jews, and other godly people who infact champion the cause of human need.

Scripturesays, “the fool has said in his heart there is no God.” (Ps. 14:1)Unfortunately, such foolishness is still proclaimed as newsworthy in the 21^stcentury.

October: Choir Notes

Choirrehearsals will resume October 9, Sunday evening at 5pm in the sanctuary. Weare anxious to see all our prior members and also look forward to having newfolks join us. While we will work on specials for church services,we will also begin workingon our Christmas cantata, "The Gift Goes On." It is a wonderful blendof traditional and contemporary music, some of which you willalready recognize. Rehearsal CDs are available for each part (soprano, alto,base) with those parts prominent with accompaniment in the background. Readingmusic is helpful but certainly not necessary. The choir will sing in bothservices approximately once a month and the cantata will probably be presentedDecember 18. Childcare is available. If you cannot attend October 9, pleasecontact Cheryl Orazem (647-1578) soon so we can know how many to plan for.Rehearsals are a time of fellowship as well as work and always seem to be ablessing to those who attend. We hope you will join us as we praise and glorifyour Lord, Jesus Christ.

"Dear Mommy and Daddy,

There are some things I want totell you about my time at church. I have many friends there. Some of my friendsare small like me but some are big like you. Big and small, we all play andwork together.

We have a secret in our class.At church, our work is play. My teacher knows this and that's why it looks likewe're "only playing" when you peek in the door. But Mommy and Daddy,we are busy at work. We are learning, practicing and experimenting so I cangrow up knowing about God, Jesus, the Bible, my friends, my family, myself andthe world around me.

Thank you for taking me tochurch. Even though I cry sometimes, I want to and need to be here with myfriends. I also know you love me and will be back to get me soon. Just rememberwhile you are gone, my teacher loves me too, and she plays with me.

ENJOY GOD'S GIFT OFFALL: Fall is a wonderful time of year. Thecool weather invites us out doors. Fresh fruits and vegetables are inabundance. Enjoy the gift of fall by planning some family fun.

Make Fall Wreaths-Go on a nature hunt forleaves and dried pine combs or sticks Glue them on a plastic plate, decoratethem and give them as gifts. Pray together thanking God for fall.

Rake Leaves-Kids love to jump in pilesof leaves. Rake them and have them jump and enjoy them. Then have them, helpbag them up for disposal.

Visit a Pumpkin Patch-This is a fun activity. Goto the pumpkin patch (plenty out on the Mesa) and let your preschooler pick hisvery own pumpkin. He can paint it or decorate it with leaves or stickers anduse as a center piece. Then cook it and make muffins or a pie. Thank God forthe pumpkins as you enjoy your snack.

Make "Thank You God" Booklet- Help you child tape or gluepictures or leaves and small articles into his booklet to remind him of all thethings God does for us and how much He loves us.

Slow down, savor the moment and thank God for Hisbeautiful gift of fall.

INDEPENDENCE DAY 2011

It seems strange to me that Americans unite behind their flags, their constitution and their government on a day of “independence” July 4th. How can we all join together when our actual goal is to celebrate our freedom from others and their opinions?

Every year it gets harder to find American ideals that we can all agree upon:
1) For example, Americans used to unite at times of war. Recently, people have become more split on that subject than thinking alike.
2) Similarly, folks in the past could unite around the national budget since it paid our collective bills. But more and more, recently, people and their legislators want to quarrel over government money.
3) The list goes on. In the past communities united in support of their school and teachers. Unfortunately, not so today. It is far more popular today to second-guess the motives and efforts of school boards, administrators, and teachers.
4) Even previously accepted American values like honesty, respect, hard work, discipline, love, & care for the poor have become relics of the past. We seem surprised to hear stories about those who give their time and resources for the good of others.

What I fear is that independence and freedom have been misinterpreted in our day. Far too many have forgotten that America is as much about caring and sacrificing as it is about criticism and thinking independently.

In a democracy, every person needs everybody else. We depend upon others to improve our country and get things done. We can’t be little dictators if we want to live together harmoniously.
So, let’s pray for national unity. Pray for an end to carping criticism and ask God to show us ways that we can be more Christ-like. Without Jesus Christ people become more and more selfish. It’s unavoidable. So, let’s pray for a return to Him and to His attitudes.

The price of gas is supposedly keeping Americans at home this year. Wouldn’t it be great if they also came home to Jesus and His love? “United in Jesus Christ”- sounds good, doesn’t it? May God bless America! (Especially those victimized by disasters!)

New people in our Sunday School classes: Thank you for attending and I pray you enjoy the classes!! As people go on vacation during the summer, it is a good time to stop and visit a church near by and attend their Sunday School!

NEW PLAYGROUND FOR CHILDREN has been erected & we are hoping the children will want to ask their friends to come to Sunday school, to learn about Jesus and to play on the Swing Set. We believe this to be a Mission Outreach for our children to invite others. We are thankful to Sherri Moore for bringing this need to our attention. We understand she had the Youth some time ago had set out to some raise money for this Playground. Even tho' it didn't materialize right away, we are grateful for her vision. We want to thank Ken Eaton for all the time he spent putting the pieces together and then others that helped, Pastor Tanner, Charlie Russell, Jason Ozant, Cheryl Eaton, Perry and Cherrie Lizar, Joe Orazem and any others. Job will done folks! God bless you all!

God depends upon our DEPENDENCE upon Him.

“ENJOYING YOUR PRESCHOOLER”

Have you ever caught yourself thinking, there just isn't enough hours in the day? After you've had a busy day do you wonder what your preschooler did the fill his day? If you feel this way you are like many parents who struggle with the stress of juggling careers, family responsibilities and household tasks.

You can't add a few hours to the day so the best thing is to understand what your preschooler needs and how you can meet those needs. Then make the choice to spend your time wisely. Every child needs a strong nurturing relationship. Your preschooler needs YOU. You know your child needs you but you have worked all day, the laundry is piling up, the lawn needs mowed and the list goes on and on.

Evaluate your daily schedule. Make a list. Prioritize them according to the importance in meeting your families needs. You will discover that some of your time is spent on things that are not meeting your preschoolers needs.

OK, now you can plan. Think T-I-M-E.

T- Turn off the TV. Use the time to read to your child or take him outside to play in the water. Have some fun.
I- Involve your child in your daily tasks. Let him help you fold the washcloths. Compliment his efforts.
M- Make time for parent/child activities. Picnics, feeding ducks, fishing, planting seeds. Include time in your plans for him.
E- Enjoy! God has given you two gifts--your child and 1440 minutes each day.

Choose to make every minute with your preschooler count. Make bedtime a half hour earlier. Tell him he doesn't have to go to sleep yet, just rest. This gives you a few minutes to put up your feet and wind down. Have a cup of herbal tea and enjoy the memories you made with your preschooler.

Church to Sponsor Gallup Project

Each year our own Ed Englebrecht utilizes his career construction skills during the summer for his faith. WORLD CHANGERS is a national Baptist effort, which involves youth, adults, and local churches in rehabilitating the homes of the underprivileged.
This year Ed and Ken Eaton are planning to provide leadership in Gallup, NM again as leaders. Ed is the project coordinator.
The project will involve 252 youth and adult participants from around the nation. They will be organized into 21 work crews and attempt 23 home improvement projects. Some of the needy live on the Navajo reservation nearby.
The work group will rally, sleep, eat, and worship at the Gallup Jr. High School facility.
Our church is encouraged to participate by making donations for building materials. Ed informed us at prayer meeting that newly elected city officials had cut off their financial participation for religious reasons. This leaves a financial hole, which we at PWBC can possibly fill. Let’s call it equity.
Checks will be received any time prior to Sunday, June 19th, when Ed & Ken leave for New Mexico. They should be made to the First Baptist Church of Gallup. Cash can be given to Ed. A donation receipt will be sent if an address is included on the check or envelope. Also, our prayers of support are especially needed for the safe travel and witness of the entire group June 20-24!
“World Changers national work projects began in the summer of 1990. Briceville, Tenn. hosted 137 youth and adults one week in the World Changers pilot project. High school youth painted, re-roofed, and performed other light construction jobs on nine homes in the area. The participants, who paid their own expenses for the project, were divided into work crews. This allowed them to meet students from other churches in addition to spending time with their own youth group and is a formula still used today. In 1992, World Changers expanded abroad with a project in Ciudad Victoria, Mexico.
World Changers is a pre-packaged mission experience for students managed by the North American Mission Board. Originally under the auspices of the Brotherhood Commission and later NAMB starting in 1997, World Changers celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2010 and is gearing up for another year of ministry this coming summer.
World Changers provides students and adults with opportunities to meet the physical and spiritual needs of others, most often by replacing roofs and tackling other repairs. Volunteers donate a week of their summer working in conjunction with cities, churches and community agencies to provide renovations at no charge to low-income homeowners.
In 2011, World Changers will mobilize 21,000 student and adult volunteers to work in 85 cities on 96 projects across the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. New project locations include Los Angeles, Gautier, La., and McComb, Miss.”

LADIES BREAKFAST: The “Sonshine” Ladies will be meeting at the church for their monthly breakfast. It is a Potluck on Saturday, June 4th at 9:00am. Marilyn Setterdahl is the hostess. All women of the church are welcome!

"CRAFTY LADIES” will meet June 28th at 1:30 PM. All ladies are invited to attend. A good time of fellowship and refreshments along with working on our Crafts, so come and enjoy! For month of May, Dora Gonzalez showed us how to make flower arrangements. Thank you Dora!

Seeing God through the eyes of a child. Had to share this with you this month. Enjoy!!

A Child's View of Thunderstorms:

A little girl walked to and from school daily. Though the weather that morning was questionable and clouds were forming, she made her daily trek to school. As the afternoon progressed, the winds whipped up, along with lightning.

The mother of the little girl felt concerned that her daughter would be frightened as she walked home from school. She also feared the electrical storm might harm her child. Full of concern, the mother got into her car and quickly drove along the route to her child's school. As she did, she saw her little girl walking along.
At each flash of lightning, the child would stop, look up, and smile. More lighting followed quickly and with each, the little girl would look at the streak of light and smile.
When the mother drew up beside the child, she lowered the window and called, "What are you doing?" The child answered, "I am trying to look pretty because God keeps taking my picture."
May God bless you today and every day as you face the storms that come your way!

from Pastor John Tanner "Silence that Kills" Last week our church entered a Sunday night study of evangelism called, "Witness Made Simple". This study followed a stirring morning message on Repentance and Revival by our study leader, Charlie Russell. I ran across an Easter devotional regarding the sin of silence, which we can all relate to: Debate has flourished about which of the wounds inflicted on Jesus actually caused His death. Among the manywounds he received were lacerations, punctures, abrasions, and contusions. There is a sense in which we can say that none of these killed Jesus. The wound that killed Him was silence. No one spoke up for Him. One of the most painful incidents in the life of Jesus was Peter's denial of Him the night before His crucifixion. Three times Peter was asked if he was one who followed Jesus, and three times he said, "No." I've said in my own heart and I've heard it said by a multitude of others, "I would never have denied Him like that" Most of us, however, can recall times when we chose to be silent when we could have witnessed. We, like Peter, deny Him by being silent. Peter probably thought that it only made sense not to put himself in danger. Many of us, also, have decided that it is only reasonable not to risk being rejected, embarrassed, or persecuted. We choose to be silent. Another form of the sin of silence is to offer only enough of a witness to ease our conscience or establish our Christian image. We tell people that we love the Lord. We eagerly tell people that we'll pray for them. We may even have a bumper sticker indicating our church affiliation. We must admit, however, that we don't share enough information with lost people to allow the Holy Spirit to change their hearts. We fail to tell our friends how they can be called out of darkness and into His wonderful light (see I Pet. 2:9). Ifwe don't share our faith, our friends will never understand the gospel, and never have an opportunity to be led by the Holy Spirit to believe. There is a wonderful story of a boy picking up a starfish from a beach and throwing them one at a time back into the ocean. He thought they needed water. A man said, "Son, look down that way." As far as he could see, the shore was covered with starfish. "Now, look up that way." As far as he could see, the shore was covered with starfish. "Son, you can't expect to throw all of those back. It doesn't make any difference how many you throw back, there will still be more left on shore." The young boy picked up a starfish and threw it back into the sea and said, "Well, I sure made a difference for that one." Just like that single starfish, the world for one person can change every time you share the gospel. Although it is an incredible thought, it is possible that God, working through you, could change the course of history. If you need proof of this truth, look in the mirror; because when you heard the gospel, your life changed forever. A lost friend's life depends on knowing the truth. We must never lose sight of the destiny of people who do not choose Christ. Many people who know what the Bible teaches about eternal life attempt to find a kind of middle ground. That is a lie. The truth is, either you follow God or you follow Satan. Either you are in a relationship with Christ or you're not; either you are born again or you're not. You are either God's child or you are God's enemy; you are either storing up wrath or you are storing up mercy; you are either heaven bound or you are hell bound. No one is in the "middle." No one is "almost there," Those who have chosen to reject Christ are condemned. We must quit believing the lie that claims God will look the other way when our family and friends who have no relationship with Christ stand before Him. We must refuse to believe that God will allow our unbelieving friends to bypass hell and join us in heaven. Our study starts at 6 pm this Sunday evening. Over 30 attended our first session! You can join in also as God’s spirit speaks to us about speaking up. SILENCE is DEADLY!

We want to thank all those who donated the pole/hoop, etc who made this possible. We encourage our Youth to invite friends to come and shoot baskets with them. It was erected for that purpose…an Outreach for the Youth to invite them to Sunday School! “Our Feature of the Month” is Shirley Schuster. Shirley is married to Ralph. She was born and raised in Leadville, CO and has 3 children, seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. She enjoys spending time with her great grandchildren. She and Ralph moved from CO Springs where they lived for 11 years before moving to Pueblo West and have been attending this church for 3 years. Shirley enjoys knitting and making new friends. She enjoys the Bible Studies at the church where she has made new friends there also. Asked, “Why I Like Sunday School?” her response was…”Ed (SS teacher) makes it so interesting. We have good discussions and I enjoy the people in the class. It’s my favorite way of starting the week and feel something missing when I’m not there.” The resurrection assures what Calvary secures. Happy Easter!!

April: The Edge on Youth

by Jim Waldenmeyer In the midst of the horrific tragedy that is the Japanese earthquake and resulting tsunami, I recently read a story concerning 50 people who are laying it all on the line for their countrymen. They have been dubbed the Fukushima 50. They are a collection of 50 nuclear plant workers who are looking death in the face. They have stayed behind at the damaged nuclear reactors to help prevent a deadly total meltdown. In doing so they are being exposed to more radiation in 1 hour than a normal plant worker is exposed to in an entire career! They have chosen to expose themselves to possible death so that others might live. What courage and self-sacrifice these 50 people are displaying! I wonder if I would have the same courage if I were in their shoes? But wait, I am. God has called me (and you young person, you mom and dad, you Christian person) to help avert a different kind of meltdown, a spiritual meltdown that could happen at any moment! "... the day of the LORD will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare."- 2 Peter 3: 10 This will be the catastrophe to end all catastrophes! We are equipped and called by Jesus to warn this generation that the return of Jesus is a reality that can't be ignored. Let's courageously spread the Gospel with passion and abandon. April Preschool Church News

“Easter and Preschoolers” by Carol Waldenmeyer We, as adults, get very excited about Easter, but to a preschooler it can be confusing or frightening because he is not old enough to understand. So as parents and teachers we need to focus on the love of Jesus. Easter is a celebration of that love. The children are told the true story but the emphasis will be on the love He showed by going to the cross. Being open and honest in a simple way helps your preschooler to accept the truth and trust you to tell him the truth. We are planning an Easter egg hunt again this year. It will be on the 23rd of April, the day before Easter. We want to separate the hunt from the true meaning of Easter. We'll have fun hunting the eggs, making a craft, and having a snack on that day so on Sunday (Easter) you can celebrate the true meaning with your preschooler. Be sure to prepare everything you need for church on Saturday night so you won't be so rushed on Sunday morning. More info on the hunt will be in the bulletin later this month. “The Measure of Success”

We have studied the lives of Bible heroes recently to discover their secret of success. One of them was Moses, who was both a success and a failure. Moses’ life was tainted in his late years when he struck the rock for water instead of speaking to it. As a result he was denied entrance in the promised land. (See Number 20:1-13)

God made it clear that Moses had become a “successful failure”. Unfortunately many of us, like Moses, do not succeed spiritually for reasons similar to Moses’. What was the reason for this man’s failure?

(1) We fail because of ATTITUDE. Moses let the people’s grumbling turn him sour toward God. In verse 10 he says, “listen you rebels…” He sounded angry. Apparently Moses felt offended that he was not appreciated sufficiently. Personal pride and desire for recognition has no place in the service of our Savoir.

(2) We fail because of DISTRUST. God explained that Moses had not honored Him by trusting Him to provide the water that would sustain the people. (v. 12) It was Moses’ lack of faith that made him a bad example to those who watched him. Likewise, we also must continually remember that people do watch our witness day-by-day and they notice if we truly trust the Lord when times get rough.

(3) We fail to OBEY God. People typically evaluate success by results in this modern world. They value prestige, wealth, popularity and appearance. But God is not impressed with results; He notices OBEDIENCE alone. The water flowed from the rock- that is results! But Moses failed in God’s eyes. The only real measure of spiritual success lies in faithful obedience to God.

The lack of obedience has serious consequences. Measure your success by sincerely obeying God in all His ways!

Starting March 6th from 9:45 – 10:00AM the SS children from Beginners through 5th grade will be practicing a couple songs to sing during the Palm Sunday Worship Services. We encourage all children to participate!! This is a great opportunity to show support for our children in the church. Please keep them in prayer.

Our Feature of the Month” is James L Hanson. James’ wife is Lily and they live in P W with many apricot trees in their yard. James has slowed down from his occupation as a Pharmacist due to health reasons. Asked, “Why I Like Sunday School?” his response was… "I try to rotate once a year to the different Adult SS classes in the church, so that I can see how the Lord is working in different classes. There are many reasons why I like SS. Reading the Word of God, praying and Fellow-shipping with brothers and sisters. It strengthens my faith, which the Almighty counts as Righteousness. Sharing joys and sorrows with my brothers and sisters helps me in my walk with God. We are challenged to see how God’s Word impacts our daily lives. In addition to our time spent together on Sundays, we do fun things together at other times.” James credits his SS teacher’s wife for being a great organizer with the Special Events in the church. His SS teacher is Charlie Russell and his wife is Rhonda. James also adds: “I am blessed that Yahyahshua, King of the Universe, is my great High Priest, Glory!!”

Succat, a Christian, missionary to his own country in Ireland, stooped down to pick up a shamrock would explain, “ this represents the Trinity: God, the Father; God, the Son; God, the Holy Spirit. Three in one and one in three and that’s the one who died for me!” March 17th might be a good day to think about Succat and the meaning of the Shamrock.

March "The Edge on Youth"

Let's God-Size It:

One day a little boy strolled casually up to his mother and asked:
"Mommy, just how big is God?"
"Bigger than everything, son" she replied.
He pressed further: "Bigger than the moon and stars?"
"Yes"
"Bigger than the whole universe?"
"That's right honey- but why do you ask?"
"Because you said that when we trust Christ, God comes to live inside us."
"I did say that sweetheart, but what does that have to do with how big he is?"
"Well Mommy, if God is bigger that the whole universe, and He also lives inside us - shouldn't He show through?"

Jesus said: "You're here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We're going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don't think I'm going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I'm putting you on a light stand." (Matthew 5:14-15)

Let's face it...that kid was onto something. It really does make sense that if the Eternal God of the universe has chosen to somehow take up residence in our puny souls, eventually folks around should be able to tell. But just what does that look like?

Well to start with it means that you are in perfect relationship with other Christians.

Let me give you a new command: Love one another. In the same way I loved you, you love one another. This is how everyone will recognize that you are my disciples--when they see the love you have for each other. (John 13:34-35)

This may seem a little strange to you, but there is no room for the Holy Spirit and hateful sourness. A Holy God and a heavy grudge cannot be room mates for long. Isn't it strange that Jesus said our distinguishing characteristic would be the way that we love each other? Not what kind of music we listen to, not what movies we do or don't attend, not even how heavy a Bible we tote around. Yet I know plenty of "spiritual" looking believers who are as dark as a thousand midnights because they refuse to forgive.

If there is one thing the grace of God should have done for you, it is the power to let go. If you want to be any kind of witness to those around you, start with the person you see in the mirror- and see if the face staring back is full of the light of forgiveness and love for other believers.

Summer is just around the corner. It's time to do some planning with your preschooler. Take him shopping for some seeds to plant as soon as the ground thaws and gets warm. Flowers or vegetables will work. Kids love to watch for the plant to show it's little head and start to grow.
If he can't wait until warmer weather, plant the seed in a cup and put it in the window. Keep it moist. How excited your child will get when he sees his plant start to grow.

Soon it will be time to work outside. What fun crawling around in the yard to see what the winter wind blew in. Where is there a better place to teach your preschooler about God than the outdoors? Just look around at God's handiwork. Flowers are popping out everywhere. Birds returning to build their nests. Trees are budding. Preschoolers love to be helpers. Spring is a good time for you to praise your child for his help. It doesn't matter if the porch is swept clean or his flower garden isn't perfect. What will matter is the conversation you have with him about God and how He is bringing the dead back to life. NOW, that's a good start for the Easter story, don't you think?

A few weeks ago the New Year’s resolution season came and went quickly. The dawning of 2011 brought a host of Slim-fast advertising, a rush of new gym patrons and other effort by many to “shape up” this year.

Unfortunately, the truth is that most of this excitement will return to normal in a few weeks. Mark Twain once said one New Year’s, “Yesterday, everybody smoked their last cigar, took their last drink and swore their last oath. Today, we are a pious and exemplary community. Thirty days from now, we shall have cast our reformation to the winds and gone to cutting our ancient shortcomings considerably shorter than ever”

Valentine’s is a similar holiday in that it can provide couples an opportunity to evaluate and strengthen their marriage. One marriage counselor suggests, “For the couple relationships, we recommend a couple checkup on an annual basis.” Out of this self-inventory they can set out new goals and resolutions to put into daily practice.

One such intention can be to make time for a “daily dialogue”. Daily dialogue is simply a matter of setting aside a few minutes to reflect on 3 questions together “What did I like about our life together today?” “What did I dislike?” and “What can I do to make it better?”

Notice that these simple questions create discussion about the relationship. Talk about the health of our marriages is a terrific Valentine’s gift! It allows each partner to receive affirmation and give needed input to the improvement of the relationship.

Most importantly, this kind of discussion allows for real communication. Such communication is the most essential dynamic of any marriage. This one element is the central distinctive of a happily married vs. unhappily married couple.

Surprisingly, experts agree that, “numerous studies have shown a strong connection between happily married couples and their individual physical health, including stronger immune systems and cardiovascular health- with no gym membership required.” (Taken from “Good Intentions/Short Retention: Improving your Relationship through Daily Dialogue”, Prepare/Enrich Monthly, Jan, 2011)

The featured book of this month is “The Making of a Disciple”, by Dr. Keith Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a evangelist in Watts. He converted and his first chapter is “Making Disciples, Not Converts”. His theme is nurturing believers to spiritual maturity is the object of Christ’s ministry. This is a good teaching book & I will surely read it again.

“CRAFTY LADIES” will resume meeting Feb. 22nd at 1:30 PM. All ladies are invited to attend. Bring a craft you are working on and have fellowship and refreshments with the group. We will also be making smocks for the pre-K SS class.

PUEBLO CO WOMEN’S CONNECTION will meet February 10, noon to 1:30 at La Renaissance Restaurant. Cost is $14.00 ($10.00 for 1st timers). Theme is “HEART SKETCHES OF LIFE.” Susan Chermack from Salida will speak on “My Brush With an Academy Award.” Feature will be Tim Acosta, with the Pueblo Chieftain, cartoonist. BIBLE STUDIES: Two Bible Studies are in process right now. One is a four week one called, “Why Believe?” (affiliated with Stonecroft Ministries Bible Studies) guided by Carol DeFusco.
The other is our winter/spring Beth Moore study on Daniel. It has started with 40 women attending the 2 sessions. There is still a book available if anyone wants to join us. Our Feature of the Month” is Frank Arellano. Frank is married to Laura and they have 4 children. (2 boys and 2 girls). They have 6 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Frank is retired and has lived in this area since 1952. He grew up in Minturn, CO in the mountains. Frank loves to fish and hunt. He’s excited to tell he has been saved for 34 years. Frank is very active in the church and attends all church functions. He works on the “Outreach” committee and spends much time calling on guests who have attended our church. Asked, “Why I Like Sunday School?” his response was…”Because you get to participate in the classroom in discussions. I have always liked Sunday School.” Frank attends Ed Englebrecht’s class.

PRESCHOOL CHURCH

It’s so noisy in that preschool room. And thank God for it!
It’s one of the busiest places in the church and a bit noisy at times but it means learning is taking place. Preschoolers learn by doing so the activities that are planned for your preschooler are for his education as well as his fun. They will help your child connect the Bible stories to his life. Being involved means making noise. Children need to experiment with body movements in order to develop muscle control and sounds to develop language. In preschool church they will lean how God wants them to act and speak. Preschoolers need quiet and noisy places. Unlike adults they can play quietly and learn in a noisy room. It’s called parallel play. Everything your child experiences in preschool church is designed to help him hear, know and do God’s will and understand that God has a plan for his life. So next time you hear all that noise coming from the preschool class, rest assured, learning is going on. Be sure to have your child in class each Sunday so he doesn’t miss any of the fun!

A fellow pastor, Joel Gregory, encouraged his congregation to begin the year “obsessed with God”. Lets consider his suggestion: OBESSED WITH GOD: A Psalm for the New Year

Psalm 63 (NIV)
(1) You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water. (2) I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your power and your glory. (3) Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you. (4) I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands. (5) I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods; with singing lips my mouth will praise you. (6) On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night. (7) Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings. (8) I cling to you; your right hand upholds me. (9)Those who want to kill me will be destroyed; they will go down to the depths of the earth. (10) They will be given over to the sword and become food for jackals. (11) But the king will rejoice in God; all who swear by God will glory in him, while the mouths of liars will be silenced.

“Do you have an obsession? Does something compel you daily in all of life? The psalmist expresses an obsession with meeting and knowing God. Psalm 63 has been called the "Soul of the Psalms." The earliest church sang it every morning. It is our psalm for a new year.

Sometimes circumstances leave us with nothing in life but God alone. David had been betrayed by his own son, exiled from his throne, and humiliated in the desert. Out of that experience, he expressed his desire for God alone. In the new year, every believer should crave a relationship with the living God.

Begin the New Year Seeking God
Do you have a passion for God? David reveals an overwhelming passion for God Himself. We should mold our approach to God after that of David, he sought God not for anything God could do for him, but for the worth of God Himself.
Seek God with intensity. "Earnestly I seek you" (v. 1) combines thoughts of earliness and eagerness in the quest for God. David's words "thirst" and "long" suggest a condition just short of fainting for the presence of God. Is there anything approaching the intensity of David in your quest for God?
Seek God with totality. David speaks of "soul" and "body" belonging to his craving for God. Taken together, he means his whole being, his total self. There is nothing about us that should know satisfaction short of God. Our emotions, reason, will, and the physical body through which they act, should all crave the living God.
Seek God out of necessity, “in a dry and weary land where there is no water" (v. 1). David considered himself like a desert in need of water from God. The greatest necessity of our life is confrontation with God.

Begin the New Year Remembering God
Remember God in worshipfulness. "I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your "power and glory” (v.2).We need high moments in God's sanctuary which we can recall in life's later low moments. Exiled and alone, David could remember gazing on the things of God in the Jerusalem sanctuary. Such "sanctuary memories" sustained him in the desert.
Remember God in wakefulness. "On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night” (v.6). At night, when sleep fails or fear stalks, we should remember God. What do you do with insomnia or sudden awakening in the night? David became so engrossed with the thoughts of God's goodness that he recalled them throughout the night. The night as well as the day ought to belong to Him.

Begin the New Year Praising God
Reasons abound for the praise of God. We can praise God because of His affection. It is literally “better than life" (v. 3). We can praise God because of the sense of spiritual satisfaction in spiritual life. Spiritually, we have been satisfied with a rich and sumptuous feastt, like eating succulent fat meat (v. 5). We can praise God for His protection. We enjoy a living protection of One who really responds to our needs, like living under the shadow of mighty wings (v. 7). We have a strong protection of the Almighty hand holding us even as we cling to Him (v. 8) .
Responses announce the praise of God. Repeatedly, David emphasizes the vocal dimension of praise to God. Singing, shouting, and lauding the goodness of God with our lips is appropriate response.
There is also a physical dimension in our praise to God. "In your name I will lift up my hands" (v. 4). This is the outward symbol of an uplifted heart. The inwardness of spiritual feeling must be completed by outward expression in physical action. “I will therefore that men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands” (1 Tim. 2:8, KJV)
There is every reason to begin the new year obsessed with God Himself. Surely we desire God to bless our church, families, and work. But first, we must seek Him for what He is in Himself.”

BETH MOORE BIBLE STUDY TO BEGIN JANUARY 25th! Please see the information and registration forms in the foyer for the new Beth Moore Bible study on “Daniel: Lives of Integrity ~ Words of Prophecy”. The study will go from Jan. 25th through May 10th, with Tuesday morning sessions at 9:30-11:30am and Tuesday evening sessions at 6:30- 8:30pm. The study actually has 12 lessons, but we are extending it an extra 4 weeks to allow more time to cover the last half of the study. Registration deadline will be January 16th! The “Live Nativity” was a huge success with many children attending and being able to pet all the animals. Cookies, hot chocolate and bags of goodies were given to the children. Our prayer is to minister to these children that they might attend SS. That is our purpose and mission.

We are thankful to God for the growing number of attendance in SS. If you are not attending and would like more information on classes, the Pastor or myself would be glad to help you.

Our Feature of the Month” is Lila Copeland. Lila is married to James and they have 4 children (two of which are twins.) They have 5 grandchildren and are expecting a 6th. Lila travels the month of May, enjoys fossil and rock hunting. She also makes and collects old dolls and also loves to read. Lila is a very giving person.
Asked, “Why I Like Sunday School?” her response was…”I like the people and love my teacher Florence. Enjoy learning about the Bible and I like the Church Family.”

When our fellowship gathers on Saturday, Nov 20th to serve our annual Community-wide Thanksgiving Dinner, we will be re-visiting a great Christian tradition.

For years we have shared a traditional meal “potluck style” and welcomed our family & friends. Early Christians did the same as they served “agape meals” along with their celebration of the Lord’s Supper. It is good for believers to share food and fellowship often.

But the inspiration to widen our holiday to include others also fits our church’s mission. Jesus told a parable in which the Master instructed his servants to “Go out into the highways and hedges and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.” (Luke 14:23) His concern was that many more should “taste of my supper.” This parable surely speaks of Christ’s overall mission to redeem sinful mankind one-by-one. As we continue in His love, we also should use every opportunity to build bridges of communication and love to our mission field, here in Pueblo West.

Still another motive for Christians and all Americans should be gratitude. The miraculous way that God protected and provided for the Massachusetts Bay colonists is still a stirring story to read. Plagued by sickness, cold, and starvation, they had lost half of those first Pilgrims during their first winter. Fortunately, they had made a Christian outreach to Indians in their neighboring territory. The record tells that it was these non-believing natives who literally rescued the whole colony by sharing both food and farming methods.

Their first Thanksgiving holiday included both thanks to God and an open invitation to those beyond their fellowship. So, we do the same! Don’t forget! Sign up soon for a super celebration of thanks on November 20th!

WOMEN’S BREAKFAST: The “Sonshine Ladies” Breakfast will be Saturday, November 6, 9 AM, at the church. It is “potluck” and Cheryl Orazam is hostess. We will be wrapping shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child (our annual project). Bring scissors, scotch tape and Christmas wrapping paper. If you have extra shoeboxes (w/detached lids), please bring them with you or leave them at the church for us to wrap. ALL ladies of the church are invited to attend.

“CRAFTY LADIES” will meet at 1:30 PM on November 9. Bring a craft and share in fellowship and refreshments.

Last month I mentioned that the SS teachers and myself have been meeting, implementing some things that were in a book called “Great Expectations.” We have had some record breaking attendance in our SS classes lately. This verse comes to mind, “Those who sow in tears will reap with shouts of joy. Though one goes along weeping, carrying the bag of seed, he will surely come back with shouts of joy, carrying his sheaves. Psalm 126:5-6.” What joy I have in my heart for answered prayer for the many that have joined the SS classes this past month. A special thank-you to our SS teachers who welcome each and everyone. For those who may be reluctant to join a class, but want to know more about our SS classes, please feel free to visit with myself or the Pastor. Each month we have a Feature of someone who attends SS and it seems most will say the “bonding, love, prayer and learning are keys to attending SS.

The winter SS material will be distributed to the Classes by November 20.

Our Feature of the Month” is Elijah Russell. Elijah lives with his father and grandparents. He attends 6th grade, Parkhill Christian Academy. He likes to play sports now and again and likes to go see his cousins in OK. He likes to go to the mountains and said the Aspen trees were pretty this Fall. Elijah is in Cindy Wilson’s SS class.
Asked, “Why I Like Sunday School?” his response was… “I’m getting to know new people I hadn’t met yet and Cindy is really nice. I learn about God’s Word.”

The November “Home Life” magazines are out, for your taking.

We should spend as much time in thanking God for our benefits as we do in asking Him for them.

"How Does A Preschooler Learn About God? "

I would like to thank everyone for all the help & donations that were so lovingly given for our fall party. We can always depend on our church family to pitch in & help whenever we call. We appreciate you all so much. I'll try to have some pictures posted on the church web site very soon.

During November your preschooler will hear God's name a lot. We will try to give him a feeling of love from the Father & us as well. The Bible stories, songs & activities will help preschoolers begin to associate God's name with love, trust & goodness. We will also encourage your child to say simple prayers out loud thanking God for his love and care. Our lessons in November are all about God's love. Get out some family photos and let your child look at them and see if he can name them, then thank God for having them in his family. Also teach him to thank God for his food & all that He provides for him each day.

We're so thankful that you bring your children to Sunday School each week. They are the future of our church and having a good foundation will determine the outcome of their ministry as they mature into leaders at PWBC. We have been fortunate enough to witness the results of our work. Two of our preschool teachers have come through our preschool department. Sarah and Sandi. We're so proud of them and they're such a blessing to us. It's a pleasure to watch the Lord work through them. Thank you, Sarah and Sandi.

Is there such an experience as “grief overload”? Surely our fellowship has felt more than it’s share of sorrow this past week, with the loss of our dear friends, Maggie Davis, Orlyn Alcock, & Lenore Parrent. “How much sadness can a church handle”, we ask.

But the Apostle Paul felt that sorrow was a basic experience in the Christian’s DNA as he said, “Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.” 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 (KJV)

Paul counseled the Corinthian Christians that when they entered the sanctuary of death and dying, they were on Hold heavenly ground. In grief, they were visiting the very heart of God. With that experience fresh in their mind he urged them to go and comfort others with the deep and substantial peace they had received for Him.

A pastor friend of mine once noticed a florists’ truck driving just ahead of the funeral procession he was leading. On the rear was a sign reading “crosses and wreaths made to order”. Our blessed Savior has promised to custom-fit our sorrows so that we can bear them WITH HIS HELP. Not too small; not to great. (Heb 4:15) He is always waiting to help us whatever the load. With Him, there can be no over-load.

One other reminder has crossed my thinking this week. That is that time and death come quickly. If we have “bucket list” we should be busy about it. Yet there is more that simple pleasures to seek out before it’s too late. Life is not just chasing after adventure and fun. Surely God also leads us to minister to Him and to others. Every precious day offers us a fresh opportunity to help & serve someone in need. There is no greater calling then passing on the love- and comfort- of our Savior.

How Does A Preschooler Learn About God?

Age is not a requirement for learning about God. From the moment your child entered the world he started learning. Sights, sounds and every new experience teaches him about the place he will call home. So you are teaching your child everything about God. When your child comes to church and shares a room with other children he learns through the actions of the teacher that God loves him. And when you pick him up again he learns not only that he can trust you but he can trust God also. Preschoolers learn through sight, smell and touch so there are lots of things to see, smell and touch in class. We try to make it fun so they'll want to come back each week. You can do the same thing at home during the week. Take time to go over the sheets your child brings home. Read the parent tips and strengthen the time you spend together. Punch holes and make a booklet for your child to play with so he can review on his own by looking at the pictures. You'll be surprised how much your preschooler learns while he is playing.

I want to take this time to thank all the workers who have volunteered to work in children's church again this year plus we have two new workers. We welcome Cheri Lizer and Jennifer Waller. I know the children will come to love spending time with you as you get to know them.

The Sunday School teachers, along with myself, have had a couple SS meetings to discuss how we could improve our SS outreach. Several ideas were presented and some will be implemented in the next few weeks. The group has decided to meet every 3 months to continue improvements in order to make our SS more informative. Continued prayer is the key for SS growth.

Our Feature of the Month” is Marilyn Setterdahl. Marilyn is married to “Spike” and they have one son. Marilyn enjoys walking, crocheting and bowling. She has been a member of this church since 1975 and has been very active in the church including Care, Hospitality, Nursery Committees and volunteer’s to help with many other things in the church. Marilyn taught children’s SS classes for 17 years. She has attended the Women’s Bible Study under Florence and is now in Adult SS class under Ed Englebrecht’s teaching. Asked, “Why I Like Sunday School?” her response was…”I love it!....and I’m still learning.”

There are Devotionals and Home Life magazine’s in the Foyer for your taking.

A Summer Concert with CrossWalk on August 22nd!!

CrossWalk will be ministering to our congregation with their Gospel music at both services Sunday, August 22nd at 8:30 and 11:00 am.

CrossWalk was honored as Vocal Group of the Year by the Country Gospel Music Association (Western Division) for 2007 and 2008 and has received numerous other awards. The group consists of sisters Penny Grasmick, Melody Espey, Deede Lowry, and Deede’s husband Tanky Lowry.
This is a wonderful opportunity to invite friends and family to worship with us.

Vacation Bible School seemed DOA (Dead) one week ago when our VBS sign disappeared Thursday before the school began. Suddenly our publicity campaign consisted of a 3-line news release in The View, a letter to last year’s attendees, and prayer.

Then Sunday after church, our prayers were answered when Christian volunteers offered to make handmade signs to display on the streets around the church. One said they would make a “sandwich man” sign and wear it at the McCulloch intersection, during rush hour.

Monday evening I was tense. Just a few kids had arrived ahead of time. Then the surprises began. Parents and kids began arriving out of nowhere and Monday’s attendance totaled 41! The next night 13 more new names were added! By Thursday night we had enrolled 70 children and 30 adult workers for a record total! And many of these did accept Christ as their Savior.

Every class was full by Thursday, when LaVern & Cheryl Bartell contributed their time, trailer, and 2 mini-horses for recreational “trail rides”. Until then the “bounce house” bonus had kept up the interest of all the age groups.

Our theme was “Roundin’ Up Questions, Drivin’ Home Answers”! The children and teachers seemed more eager than ever to do just that. We all had so much fun with every facet of the school: singing, memorizing scriptures, learning about faith, snacking, and enjoying fun and fellowship. As one worker said, “Give me a year to recover and I’ll do it all again- just give me 3 more helpers next time.”

Ladies: It’s time to begin “thinking fall,” and September 14th brings the beginning of another Beth Moore Bible study, this time entitled “Living Beyond Yourself: Exploring the Fruit of the Spirit.”

Hear a word about the study: “You can know the freedom of a life filled with the fruit of the Spirit. Through this study you’ll come to appreciate the supernatural aspects of the fruit and will learn that you cannot grow, learn, or produce the fruit on your own.” We will be challenged “to develop the fruit by maintaining an intimate relationship with the Spirit of God. As you walk with God, He develops in you the fruit of the Spirit. A Spirit-filled life truly results in ‘living beyond yourself.’ It is living proof that the Spirit of God dwells in us.” On a personal note, those of us who did this study with another group last year felt a real impact in our every day lives. What a blessing it has been!

This is an 11-week course that will end in November. We began having two sessions on Tuesdays last year and probably will do so again, depending on the interest level. The morning group would meet Tuesday mornings from 9:30–11:30; the evening group, Tuesdays from 6:30-8:30. In addition to getting better acquainted with other women from our church, we are blessed by many women from our community who attend as well. Our time of fellowship, prayer, and snacks complements our study time.

Beth Moore’s teaching videos give great insight to our five daily lessons per week from the member study book. She is truly blessed and used by God to inspire and enlighten through her teaching gift, at times serious and at times humorous.

This study is a great one for women new to Bible study as well as for veteran Bible students. We have a great time together and love learning what God has in store for us from each lesson. Please plan to join us.

The “SonShine Ladies” will be having their Women’s Breakfast combined with the men on August 7th at 9:00am at the Tanner’s house! The ladies will be packing a Military Box to send to one of our military families. All ladies & men are welcome to this breakfast!

A Stonecroft Bible Study “Why Believe” will start Tuesday, August 3rd at 7pm at Esther’s House. This is a 4-week study and books are $6.00. Call Esther (547-4524) for more info.

A copy of Beth Moore’s book, So Long Insecurity: You’ve Been a Bad Friend to Us, has been purchased for the church library by some of the women from the Tuesday Bible studies. After being passed among those from the study, it will be housed in the library and available to everyone. Thanks for the memories! The old song rings true when I think of the contribution that Charlie and Lenore Parrent have made to my life over the last 10 years.

The Parrent’s were known as the church’s great love affair after they moved to Pueblo West from Chicago in 1979. I recall an article and picture in The View telling of their large family, their hand-in-hand walks, and their participation in the PW seniors group.

Here at the church they were counted among the faithful core supporters through the church’s lean years. Charlie served as a Deacon and a Trustee.

Charlie and I share the same birthday, so we made it a point to celebrate together by taking our wives out to eat each year. He had an affinity for coupons, so we lived large on the cheap at La Renaissance, during the early evening discount hours. He was also known for grocery shopping- using his clip file to stock up on good food deals!

Here was a marriage centered in Christ and the church. They met at a church in Chicago and continued serving Him faithfully to their current ages- now in their mid-90s.

Dave Parrent, youngest of 9 boys, has kept up on his folks most recently. He has made numerous calls and visits to monitor their health and housing needs. Now he has arranged to bring them closer to his home near San Francisco.

It will be a sad good-bye this Sunday to say so long to our good friends. What an example these two Parrents have been to all of us who love the Lord, our families, and our church.

A Book Review by Chris Trask

Why do good people have to suffer? Why doesn’t God remove suffering from this world, at least for those who serve him or for the innocent? In his 1986 publication, “Making Sense of Suffering,” Peter Kreeft examines these questions.

If you are looking for a quick answer to this deep and unknowable mystery, this book will frustrate you. Mr. Kreeft is a professor of philosophy, and as such, asks the reader to accompany him on a journey examining the question of suffering in a manner many will be too impatient to undertake.

The book contains many insights and kernels of wisdom. The author examines the easy answers and points out why they cannot be correct. He also takes a look at modern society and shows why we cannot begin to understand the question of suffering within our current paradigm.I found the book to be worthwhile. Like everyone else, I was looking for the easy answer, but now I have a deeper understanding of the question and a deeper appreciation of the sacrifice our Lord Jesus has made for us.

She recently graduated from college, earning a Bachelors degree in art. She has a younger brother and sister. Her hobbies are photography and reading. Sarah is in Pastor’s S.S. class Asked, “Why I like Sunday School?” Sarah says, “ I enjoy Sunday School because of the great discussions that we have centered around God’s word and that we can share all of our prayer requests."

Since our members and friends were so kind to respond to the request of the worship committee with suggestions and comments on the worship service, we want to share with you the results of our meeting. Our goals continue to be to make the worship services flow more smoothly to enhance a worshipful atmosphere and to allow the pastor more time for preaching the Word.

The most frequent comments we received related to starting and ending on time and this is among the first to implement. Promptly at 8:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m., our first song will serve as the call to worship. We will begin closing the doors into the sanctuary a few minutes prior to that to remind those still visiting to come in and take their seats. When the first service starts and ends late, time is taken away from the Bible study classes and second service begins late as well.

We will ask the congregation to rely on the bulletin and the screen for both the announcements and the scripture passage rather than having them mentioned from the platform. Ushers are being asked to automatically come forward at the end of the singing for the offertory time. By streamlining some of these transitions and starting on time, we hope to add 4-5 minutes to the pastor’s sermon time so he is not rushed to conclude.

Comments on the worship music indicate that the congregation is blessed by both the traditional hymns as well as the praise songs. We continue to strive to make all the music meaningful and honoring to the Lord. We believe our worship is all about Him, and our time on earth is a rehearsal for our praise time in heaven when we will join with all the other saints and the living beings repeating God’s praises for eternity. (Rev. 4:8)

“SUMMER'S HERE, TIME TO MAKE SOME MEMORIES”

Summer is a grand time to make some memories with your preschooler. Don't let the time slip by before you have time to enjoy it with your children. Forget about the daily routine and plan some activities that will surely make good conservation as your preschooler gets older. Start with an empty calendar and begin to pencil in some fun things to do. Such as every Monday can be "Library Day". Tuesday and Thursday can be "Swim Day", Saturday morning visit grandparents. Be sure to write in one-time events such as VBS and family vacations. A special day at the children’s museum is always a fun treat. Then look for fun things around town to round out your summer. Also have a stay at home day to relax and enjoy each other. Plant a flower and track it's growth, paint the driveway with tempera paint and hose it down, put up a tent and eat lunch in it, go on a nature walk, have a summer party where only bare feet are allowed, plan a mud day (kids love to play in the mud), have Patriotic Day for the 4th (let the kids decorate their bikes, wagons or pets and have a parade to celebrate America.) Be sure to prepare a special box of games and activities for that rainy day that may come along. Preschool activities do not have to be elaborate or expensive. Be sure to set aside plenty of time for sleeping late, playing dress up with friends and enjoying bagged lunches in the yard. If your children spend most of their days in a preschool or at a baby sitters they might just like to spend those quiet times with you in the evening listening to Bible stories or talking about their day and eating snacks. This can be a relaxing time for you after a busy day at the office. Be sure to include God in all you plans. Let your preschooler know how much he is loved by God and the wonderful things He has given us to enjoy. Have a happy and safe summer.

In Forever Young: My Friendship with John F. Kennedy, Jr., Billy Noonan recalls the life experiences he shared with the son of President John Kennedy.

In 1980, as one of the stories goes, John Jr. and Billy were invited aboard the USS John F. Kennedy aircraft carrier. On a guided tour of the ship, the two young men and their guide inadvertently entered a restricted area. When an officer stopped them, the guide pointed to John and said, “This is his father’s ship.” Snapping to attention, the officer saluted John. He explained his understanding that when a US Navy ship is named for someone, it is considered that person’s ship. Thus, as the son of the man for whom the ship was named, John Jr. had unique privileges.

This illustrates a vital spiritual principle. As adopted children in God’s family, we who have been saved possess the position of sonship. Paul wrote that as believers we are “predestined . . . to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself” (Eph. 1:5). By virtue of this sonship, we have the unique privileges that belong to the children of the King of kings.

In life’s challenging voyage, we can take courage that our “Abba, Father” (Rom. 8:15) owns the ship and shares all with us. Praise God, we are joint-heirs with Christ!

Our “FEATURE OF THE MONTH” is Maurine Lane. Maurine has been attending this church for about 10 years. She has 2 sons, 5 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Her hobbies are sewing and quilting. Maurine’s husband, Glenn passed away in February of 2009. They both went to SS together. Maurine still attends Ed Englebrecht’s class. Asked, “Why I like Sunday School?” Maurine says, “I love the SS fellowship, the prayer time and the concern we have for one another. Bible Study is just wonderful. I like Ed’s teaching and he is a wonderful teacher.”

“A Loving Father” by Carol Waldenmeyer

Jesus told a story about a loving father in Luke 15:11-32. In that story a father waited each day watching for the return of his son who left home. When the son arrived, the father ran to embrace him and welcome him back. God is like that loving father. He waits for us to "come home" to him. He loves us and welcomes us into a relationship with him. Fathers have a big responsibility to teach their sons and daughters about God. In pre-school church we teach the importance of children obeying their father and mother. Children are the product of their parents. Be sure your children will mimic you. Is your love for God showing through them? Your PWBC preschool department would like to wish each Dad a Happy Fathers Day this June 20th.

Heard about the “King who knew not Joseph”? The Bible recounts in Ex. 1:8 a day when the Pharaoh was no longer Israel's friend. Spiritual forgetfulness often redirects the affairs of God’s people.

For example, here at PWBC we have discovered that our beautiful new building has become “under-funded”. Over the last 2 years we have failed to educated out membership how our building is to be financed. Several years ago, when we began to pray and prepare for the expansion, a special building fund was created. Our people responded by contributing over and above their regular giving in to this fund.

But things have changed a bit. For one thing, many of us have joined since the project was completed. Others have moved away. Our finance committee has asked that this new generation be challenged to consider “over and above” giving until the debt is retired. (The balance is just below $200,000.) The rest of us should also be challenged to give above our tithe to complete our commitment.

Since the announcement was made last Sunday, I am praying that we will see an influx of new giving. When we hear the finance report each month I hope to see that many of you have caught a vision of this new challenge.

What a difference our expanded building has made to the ministry of PWBC! Hardly a day goes by that some group or program doesn’t take advantage of our new spacious, clean education building. I can’t imagine how we ever did without it.

Please pray about your participation in this urgent need. Surely the Lord will bring us together to sacrificially supplement our funding of His work in His beautiful house!

He says “Shawn is spending time with her mom in Mississippi and is also traveling to the eastern states to watch our daughter Alex, play softball for the University of Maryland and we hope she will be an ‘All American.’ Our son Connor loves Soccer and was 4th in State with his team ‘Future Business Leader’s of America.’ I like to fish and camp and enjoy my church family.” Asked, “Why I Like Sunday School?”… Chuck replies, “It is just like having a party every Sunday. You are with friends and laugh and pray and learn God’s Word!”

My interest is apologetics and even though I am not a good debater, I still like reading about it. Two great sources the library has are Ramsey Alcorn’s book “Pro-life Answers to Pro-choice

Arguments” at 363.46 ALC in our library. This book is up to date and in a loving way, explains
the pro-life position. Also, we have a VHS tape “Darwinism Science or Naturalistic Philosophy?” which has at debate at Stanford University between Wm. Provine and Phillip Johnson. It gives a great look at the evolution debate & students have many good questions at the end of the tape by the debaters. This is in our video section.

READING TO YOUR PRESCHOOLER

Reading to your child can be one of the most meaningful activities you can do with him. It can reinforce positive emotional relationships, strengthen language development, lay a foundation for learning to read, teach ways of sharing Bible truths, lengthen a childs attention span, help a child to remain focused on an activity, enhance a childs listening ability and encourage a childs love for literature. I'm sure we have some books in our church library that your preschooler would enjoy. Talk to our library staff and see if they can suggest a book. Take time in the library with your preschooler and let him select a book. I'm sure the staff would love to help you. Chuck Schultz, Chris Trask or Laura Arellano will be available if you need help. Just give them a call.

Summer is upon us and it can be stressful trying to entertain your preschooler when it's raining or when it's too hot to go out side. Books are a great way for your child to take imaginary advertures throughout the day. The Pueblo West Library has a great children's section also. So, start planning a book tour with you preschooler and see what fun you can have.

In May your preschooler will be learning about a families love for one another. Helping each other is a way to show our love for one another. Chilldren will learn that their family is a blessing from God and each one has a part in keeping the home a happy one.

The library has many video adventures available for family use. These videos have good lessons that will help you teach your children and grandchildren values. They are perfect for outings in the car, so after the show you can discuss why this trait is something that we admire. Take this time to be purposeful with the ones you love.

Why does the date of Easter change each year? If Christmas is the same date and marks Jesus' birth, why not Easter? The confusion arises over the Jewish celebration of Passover, the day before Jesus’ crucifixion.

The Council of Nicaea (A.D. 325) set the date of Easter as the Sunday following the paschal full moon, which is the full moon that falls on or after the vernal (spring) equinox (March 21).
We know that Easter must always occur on a Sunday, because Sunday was the day of Christ's Resurrection. But why the paschal full moon? Because that was the date of Passover in the Jewish calendar, and the Last Supper (Holy Thursday) occurred on the Passover. Therefore, Easter was the Sunday after Passover.

To make things even more confusing, Easter isn't celebrated universally on that date. While Western Christians use the Gregorian calendar (the calendar that's used throughout the West today, in both the secular and religious worlds) to calculate the date of Easter, the Eastern Orthodox continue to use the older, astronomically inaccurate Julian calendar. Currently, March 21 on the Julian calendar falls on April 3 in the Gregorian calendar. Therefore, for the Orthodox, the Sunday following the 14th day of the paschal full moon has to fall after April 3, hence the discrepancy in the date of Easter between East and West.

Most importantly, Easter is the central celebration of our faith. It marks both the day Jesus died for us and the day he brought victory over death. I hope you get really excited about our LIVING CHRIST! Even if all else fails, we know he holds our future in his hands for ever and ever!

GPS by 2020!

Across the USA, Baptists are joining hands to share the gospel with everybody by 2020. GPS, or “GOD’S PLAN for SHARING”, encourages every church to reach every home across the continent by prayer walking, gospel distribution, or a personal invitation to Easter services.
Our church has been challenged by Evangelism Chairman, LaVern Bartell and Pastor Tanner to participate in three main projects: (1) Follow up contacts from a nation-wide TV media campaign (Mar 20– April 11), (2) Prayer walking and door knob tract distribution during March, and (3) a 5-week follow-up process after Easter.

Our Choir’s Easter Cantata, on April 4th, will be the focus of our community-wide attendance effort.

Spring Bible Study
The spring women’s Bible study will begin April 13 and run for six weeks through May 18, before concluding for the summer. “Anointed, Transformed, Redeemed: A Study of David” features three well-known Bible study teachers, representing 3 generations, via DVD: Beth Moore, Kay Arthur, and Priscilla Shirer, with each teaching 2 lessons. This study evolved from a “Deeper Still” event sponsored by LifeWay in which these three women explored their own lives and the life of David. This is a great opportunity to get to know other Bible teachers, to look at the life of King David from three different perspectives, and to grow ourselves spiritually. Each teacher has written her own lessons to be completed, one for each of five days per week.

Morning classes will be held each Tuesday from 9:30-11:30 am. Evening classes will be Tuesdays from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Cost of the member book is $17 and scholarship help is available. Deadline for registration is April 4 and checks are to be payable to Pueblo West Baptist Church. See the information and registration forms on the display table in the foyer. The groups of women who participate in these studies represent all ages and are from several different churches as well as the community. We have a wonderful time of discussion, prayer, and fellowship, and then eagerly watch the teaching DVD at the end of each session. We invite you to join us for this spring study. In the fall, our study will most likely be Beth Moore’s “Living Beyond Yourself: the Fruit of the Spirit,” which is a life-changing time in the Word.

Women's "Sonshine" Ladies will have their Ladies Breakfast at the church 9:00 am with Dora Gonzalas hosting. It will be on the 2nd Saturday, this month!

A Stonecroft Ministries Bible Study will begin Wednesday 2:00 PM April 7th, at the church. Carole DeFusco will be guiding this 5 week study called AWARE Evangelism. It will focus on Notice/Watch/Connect/Respond & Encourage someone. The study books are $7.00 each. For more information call Carole at 547-0926. Invite a friend and come enjoy the study as you do this lesson together.

The "Crafty Ladies" will meet on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month at 1:30. Bring your needlework and enjoy the fellowship and refreshments.
