TANNER’S TRAIL

by Pastor John Tanner

This New Year’s thought, from Our Daily Bread, is a great suggestion to spiritually
spice up your life in 2010!

On January 1, 2008, Keith Severin and his 7-year-old son, Adrien, agreed that they would spend at least 15 minutes every day that year searching together for treasure.

Carlos Alcalá’s article in the Sacramento Bee described how they went out each day in every kind of weather to see what they could find. A year later their collection of coins, golf balls, recyclable bottles and cans, and various other items had yielded more than $1,000. In the process, they enjoyed many hours of companionship and fun.

If we decided to spend 15 minutes a day searching for treasure in the Bible, what would we find? Solomon wrote: “If you seek [wisdom] as silver, and search for her as for hidden treasures; then you will understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God. . . . Then you will understand righteousness and justice, equity and every good path” (Prov. 2:4-5,9).

Growth won’t happen all at once. But gradually, day by day, we will be changed through reading God’s Word and obeying Him. And think of the privilege and pleasure of spending time with our heavenly Father. (David C. McCasland)

From the Church Library...

Start of the year right, come check out a good book to read! Parents, grandparents, children love to be read to. There are lots of good children’s story books. Some by authors like, James Dobson. The Little Golden Books, and many of the Odyssey tapes.

It’s been said that children who are read to actual become good readers!

One book that has helped me out a lot in working with children is “The Book of Virtues” by William Bennett.

Come start the New Year off with a good book! Please remember to record the book checked out in the folder and when returned.

Happy Reading, Laura Arellano

Sunday School January Update!

from our S.S. Superintendent, Esther Nagel
SUNDAY SCHOOL POTLUCK & GAMES: January, 17th, after the 2nd Worship Service we will be having a potluck and table games in the church foyer for all the Sunday School children/teens and teachers. Meat, drinks, and eating utensils will be furnished. Prizes will be awarded to those who invite a friend to the Sunday School class that day!

Our “Feature of the Month” is Cheryl Neff. Cheryl has been in Pueblo west for 33 years and this the only church she has attended. Cheryl is in Johnny Norris’ class… and when asked, “Why I like Sunday School?” her reply was, “I enjoy S.S. because I have learned so much more and have developed a closer walk with God. Everyone in the class is like family in a big church family.” Cheryl has 4 children (1 daughter & 3 sons) and 12 grandchildren. Cheryl lost a grandson in a tragic accident this past summer. Our church family all mourned with her. She is happily anticipating the arrival of a new grandchild, expected date, January 24th!

Each month there is a magazine called, “Home Life” out in the foyer and in the classrooms. Pick one up… they have good articles, recipes, etc. Also, pick up a Mission Magazine in the foyer!

What Your Preschooler Does at Church

by Carol Waldenmeyer

Even the youngest preschoolers can be part of the worship and learning at church. People enjoy going to church. They sing, talk to God, listen to Bible stories and talk about God and Jesus at church. Preschoolers will learn the purpose of church as we explore the different actions of people at church. Introduce your child to people at church and explain what they do. Get your child familiar with God's word. Let him hold the Bible and look through it as you read to him. Sing songs about God and let him help prepare for the day at church. Children love to be part of the planning. Let your child see that going to church is an exciting time, not a chore. In January, your preschooler will learn to worship in different ways. Singing, Reading the Bible, Helping, and Working together and Learning about Jesus. Live in a way that pleases God. God wants us to follow His guidelines and one of His guidelines is raising your children up in the Lord (Proverbs 22:6) Be sure to have your preschooler in church every week so he doesn't miss the plans that are made for him each week.

Women’s Ministry

LADIES BREAKFAST: The January breakfast has been moved to the 9th of January @ 9:00 because of the holiday weekend. We'll have a potluck at the church and talk about our plans for the New Year. All ladies are welcome. We still need someone to host the March breakfast. If you are interested please talk to Carol Waldenmeyer, 547-8064.

“Crafty Ladies” will begin meeting in February, on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month at 1:30 in the Educational Building. All ladies are welcome!

A Stonecroft Ministries Bible Study called, “Where is the Holy Spirit?” will begin Wednesday, January 13th at 2:00pm at the church. This is a 6-week study. For info/registration call Esther Nagel at 547-4524.

A New Beth Moore Study:
The new evening women’s Bible study will be held on Tuesdays, 6:30-8:30 pm, beginning January 19 for ten weeks, ending on March 23. Do we really take God at His word...believing what He has told us… or do we just believe in His existence and the salvation He offers?
“Believing God: Experiencing a Fresh Explosion of Faith,” a Beth Moore study, explores what it means to truly believe God: believing He is who He says He is, believing He can do what He says He can do, and other statements of faith. By studying in Hebrews 11 the lives of Abraham, Moses, and other heroes who believed God, we are encouraged to deepen our own trust in God by understanding who He truly is and to receive a fresh word from Him.

All women from our church and community are invited to share in a time of prayer, fellowship, and snacks as well as a great study. Individual study
consists of five lessons per week, followed by a teaching video at each meeting. Cost of the study book is $20. Scholarship money is available. Childcare for our church ladies may be available if children are pre-registered.

Please see additional information in the foyer or contact Cheryl Orazem (647-1578). Registration forms and payment (to PWBC) are due by January 10 so books can be ordered.

We had a wonderful group of 20-25 for the last study and we hope new ladies will be able to join us. The group may divide into two smaller groups for discussion for this study, and then we will join together for Beth’s dynamic teaching video. Please join us and bring a friend!

Happy New Year!!
from Pueblo West Baptist Church

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
