2nd Community Wide Thanksgiving Dinner

2nd Community Wide Thanksgiving Dinner
Saturday, November 21
12 – 2 p.m.

Plans are in the making for our 2nd Community Wide Thanksgiving Dinner. Last year’s dinner was a great success. We fed about 150 people and the church overwhelmingly stepped up to the plate. In fact, I venture to say it was a fun day and has turned into an annual church event. What a way to get into the holiday mood. This year we are hoping to feed 200 people. But we can’t do this without you. Please consider working on one of the following committees - Welcome committee, Serving committee, Clean up committee, Purchase committee, Set up committee, Beverage committee or Publicity committee. The sign-up poster is in the foyer. But it doesn’t stop there. It takes many cooks and a whole lot of food to feed 200 people. A traditional Thanksgiving menu is planned all we need is for you to sign up to bring the food. This sign-up poster is in the foyer also. Please sign up to bring as many food items as you can. We want to be sure to have enough food. We are a small church and this is a big undertaking with great rewards and can not be done without the entire church supporting it. If you have questions or suggestions, see Carol Norris, 547-2371.

Also, the church family is invited and encouraged to come and
enjoy this special Thanksgiving Dinner!

Operation Christmas Child Shoeboxes will be available on Sunday, Nov. 8th!

If you are not familiar with OCC, this is a very special ministry that sends shoeboxes filled with gifts, to children in other countries, ranging from ages 2-14. These children are very poor and may not know much about Jesus, but through this ministry, children are receiving love and hope at Christmas time! We hope you are planning on participating in this special ministry!
A brochure will be included in each box that you take, telling you exactly what you are supposed to do. You may choose a boy or a girl, in the age ranges are 2-4, 5-9, and 10-14.

Please Note- usually the boys in the 5-9 age range get the least boxes collected.

The deadline to return your filled shoeboxes to
the church is Sunday, November 22nd!

TANNER’S TRAIL by Pastor John Tanner

Holidays are here! Can you believe it? Ready or not the days come quickly. But don’t forget that most of our American observances are extensions of ancient “Holy Days”.

For example, we dropped in on our grandkid’s grade school Halloween spook parade today. What a treat! While our special spook dressed as Snow White, most of the others tried to frighten their friends with all manner of ghoulish costumes. Who would ever guess that 1000 years ago the Druids in Europe, along with the Roman Church lit great fires celebrating All-Saints Eve on October 31 to ward off evil spirits?

The observance of Thanksgiving can be traced to the Feast of the Tabernacles, an ancient Jewish (3000 years ago) celebration of harvest and plenty in the Promised Land. In America, Thanksgiving had historic significance as the early colonists thanked God for preserving their settlement in a new land through a difficult first year. Here at PWBC we plan to observe the day by sharing from our abundance with others in our community! What better way to say thanks to God for His provisions to us.

Of course, Christmas marks the birth of our Savior and is celebrated be retelling the miraculous story of His coming– through music, nativity re-enactments, and the exchanging of gifts and expressions of Christian love.

Obviously, all of these special celebrations have also found a place in the American economy and our social calendars. Some Americans have little appreciation for the tremendous religious heritage that accompanies these fall observances. But for the Christian, there is a rich and fulfilling message from Scripture and our faith to thrill our hearts again.

So, let’s give ourselves afresh to the Lord of this season as we set aside the conflicts and worldly concerns that confront us, everyday. May God bless you richly throughout these special days as you put Him first in your life!

See You Sunday!

Women’s Ministry

Women’s Breakfast: The women will be wrapping Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes at the breakfast on Sat. Nov. 7 at 9am. Please bring wrapping paper, tape, scissors as well as a shoebox or two. Extras will be provided. This will be a potluck so please bring a small covered dish. RSVP to Cheryl O by Nov. 3 if you are planning to attend. Hope to see all the regulars and many new faces.

“Crafty Ladies” will resume meeting after the first of the year. We have had good fellowship while working on our projects and will pick up again on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month beginning in 2010.

BIBLE STUDIES: The Beth Moore and Stonecroft Ministry Bible Studies will be ending in the month of November. Both will resume after the first of the year. Watch for announcements on the new studies in our December Newsletter.

From the Library Committee...

The Library Committee is planning on highlighting our books each month to familiarize our congregation with valuable books that are available. Some of which are “Evidence That Demands a Verdict” by Josh McDowel. This book gave me facts to combat arguments presented to me in my college days that were trying to undermine God’s Word. It is a must read for all
Christians. Know why history, archeology, and reliability all meet at your heart.

Two of my favorite chapters are the Messianic Prophecies and Reliability of the Bible. These two chapters have helped me lead people away from “hear say” statements the kept them from
seriously looking at the Bible.

YOUTH UPDATE!

On Saturday, October 24th, some of our youth and I participated in the annual "Great Pumpkin Chase" sponsored by Young Life, the Christian youth organization. The object is to be the first team to find the Great Pumpkin. Each team is given clues to lead them through 10 different stations scattered all around Pueblo County. At the 9th station the final clue leads to the location of the Great Pumpkin.Out of over 50 teams, made up from over 800 teenagers, our Pueblo West Baptist "Team Edge" finished 3rd, an outstanding achievement for our 1st time participating! Congratulations Halie, Tashe, and Eli for doing a terrific job! It was an awesome experience!

Sunday School News by Esther Nagel

The Pre-K through 5th grade Sunday School Classes will be meeting together on November 8th, in Juleen Edwards Sunday School Room at 9:40 am to watch a “Veggie Tale” Operation Christmas Child video. Parents and teachers can take note of this to meet in Juleen’s classroom. If you have any questions about this, please feel free to contact the church.

Our “Feature of the Month” is Yours Truly… Esther Nagel. Esther is married to Bob and they have one daughter Susan. They moved to Colorado in 1981 from Iowa. Pueblo West Baptist Church has been their home church since 1997. Esther enjoys reading (especially autobiographies), Bible Studies, doing woodwork on her Scroll Saw, and needlework. Why I Like Sunday School? “It helps me to grow spiritually and equips me for the Lord’s work. I learn something new every week” Sunday has been Esther’s favorite day of the week, as she has always loved going to Sunday School. That is where she accepted the Lord, as a child… in Sunday School class. Her teacher at PWBC is Florence Trevithick and Esther thinks that she is a wonderful teacher.

The new quarterly Sunday School books will be distributed to classes on Nov. 22nd. Don’t forget to pick up a “Home Life” magazine, in your classroom on in the foyer. We have a new Mission Magazine also on display for your taking.

The young folks with perfect SS attendance will be recognized in Dec.

“O tast and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him” Psalm 34:8 Remember, no one can taste for you. Happy Thanksgiving!!

PRESCHOOL CHURCH NEWS by Carol Waldenmeyer

What a privilege it is that our creator longs to hear our voice and wants a personal relationship with us. As we work with your preschooler, we will tell Bible stories about people who talked to God, and we'll help your preschooler understand that he can talk to God also. Preschoolers will learn that God always listens and hears us when we talk to Him. The emphasis for November is on prayer and talking to God. Your child will hear his teachers use brief prayer statements to talk to God and thank Him. This months Bible stories recall Jesus teaching about prayer and persons who talked to God. Your preschooler can learn that prayer is talking to God. Help him learn about prayer by example. Thanksgiving is a wonderful time for your child to hear family members thank God. Say simple prayers throughout each day to help your child sense the importance of talking to God.

Thank you to all of you who donated candy, money, prizes, cupcakes and drinks as well as your time to make our fall party a huge success. Pictures will be posted on the church web site in the near future.
